Description:

An excessively rare medal recipient's certificate, awarded to a Hungarian competitor at the 1936 Olympic Games at Berlin. The impressive document measures 15.5 x 11 in. sight and is largely gilt. At top, the document bears the heading in relief (in German): 'In honor of the Fatherland to the glory of sport' Beneath appears a large, engraved image of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, and it in turn is flanked by relief images of the Brandenburg Gate at left, and the German Olympic Bell at right. Beneath these lies the presentation: 'XI OLYMPIAD BERLIN 1936 CERTIFICATE OF HONOR', and hand-lettered: 'HUNGARY THIRD [Bronze Medal] 4 x 200 SWIM RELAY' In this event, the four Hungarian swimmers were Oszkar Abay-Nemes, Ferenc Csik, Arpad Lengyel, and Odon Grof who went on to become a medical doctor, and died during World War II in an air raid while assisting a wounded man. Japan and the U.S. came in first and second, Japan setting a new world's record. At bottom appear facsimile signatures of German Olympics president Theodor Lewald and International Olympics president Henri de Baillet-Latour. Olympic rings appear between their signatures. A moderate vertical crease extends vertically from the center of the bottom margin to near the top, lessening in degree from bottom to top, some expected soiling and a few tiny spots to the gold field, else very good.
