Description:

Very rare original badge once used by an 'athletics' referee in the 1936 Summer Olympics, who very likely oversaw the record-breaking performances of Jesse Owens. The piece is constructed of 1.75 square in. silvered bronze, with a 2.75 in. orange ribbon hanging at bottom. The badge bears the impressed label 'RICHTER' ('Referee') beneath a depiction of the Brandenburg Gate and the Olympic rings. The front of the ribbon bears the black lettering 'Licht-athletik' ('Athletics'). The reverse bears a functioning horizontal straight pin and catch, above a stamped issue no. '141' and the maker's mark of 'L. Chr. Lauer' from Nuremberg and Berlin. Lightly worn from age and use, else very good. 'Athletics' includes all track-and-field events, and considering Owens won the gold medal in four such events, the wearer of this badge was very possibly involved in Owens' legendary victories.
