Description:

1933 GERMAN MASONIC NECKLACE
Impressive 1933 German Masonic necklace, a rather elaborate creation consisting of a 2.75 x 3.25 in. hallmarked sterling plaque with brass Masonic symbols affixed to it, including a compass, trowels, square, etc. Beneath them appears a brass mobile swastika and engraving: 'Otto Beu 1932 1933' The plaque is suspended beneath 23 coins symmetrically arranged, some affixed to each other, the coins and coin arrangements connected by small lengths of chain, with a longer length of chain at the top to allow the necklace to be worn. Very good. Quite an unusual piece: one 'Otto Beu' was born and raised in Germany, but at some point, came to the U.S. and fought in the Army during World War II. Of course, Hitler despised the Freemasons. He believed that they were part of a conspiracy working against the interests of German nationalism. Criticism of Freemasons was a regular theme in Nazi propaganda – often framed in antisemitic discourse about the threat from ‘World Jewry'. Thousands of Freemasons were persecuted by the Nazi regime, and many were imprisoned in concentration camps, classed as political prisoners.
