Description:

1930S ENTERTANIMENT AUTOGRAPHS INCLUDING DUKE ELLINGTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA
A spectacular relic of the waning days of vaudeville, a 282pp., 8vo. autograph album kept by a forgotten male singer by the name of "Jarley", completely filled in with over 500 signatures of performers taken while on tour from June 1934 through June 1936. Signatories include: DUKE ELLINGTON together with inscriptions from numerous members of his orchestra including vocalist IVIE ANDERSON (1905-1949), trombonist JUAN TIZOL (1900-1984), drummer SONNY GREER (1895-1982), bassist BILLY TAYLOR (1906-1986), cornetist REX STUART (1907-1967), contortionist dancer BRADY 'JIGSAW' JACKSON, trombonist LAWRENCE BROWN (1907-1988), trombonist 'TRICKY' SAM NANTON (1904-1946), saxophonist & clarinetist BARNEY BIGARD (1906-1980), and many others. While performing at the Roxy Theatre on Oct. 29, 1934, Jarley had to opportunity to meet baseball players DIZZY DEAN and PAUL DEAN, both of whom sign the album. Other signatures include EDGAR BERGEN and GEORGE JESSEL (with 1" x 1" photo affixed). The balance of the signatures are of much less known performers whom Jarley encountered while touring, including burlesque acts, strongmen, tap dancers, animal acts, blackface performers, feather dancers and many others. A majority of the signatures have inscriptions together with a tiny photograph affixed, transforming a mere autograph album into an encyclopedia of variety performers. Should be viewed. Some pages toned from old newspaper clippings and tape, binding loose but intact, else very good condition.
