Description:

1915 KARL GOETZ "SINKING OF THE LUSITANIA MEDAL" WITH BOX
British propaganda copy of the German-issue Karl Goetz medal which attracted so much attention that Lord Newton, who was in charge of propaganda at the Foreign Office in 1916, decided to develop the anti-German feelings aroused by it for propaganda purposes. This English "5 May" copy is in the original box of issue (box damaged). Present with the medal is a printed document, 1p. 4to, a leaflet explaining the purpose of the medal, in part: "...This medal has been struck in Germany with the object of keeping alive in German hearts the recollection of the glorious achievement of the German Navy in deliberately destroying an unarmed passenger ship, together with 1,198 non-combatants, men, women and children... The designer has put in guns and aeroplanes, which... the Lusitania did not carry, but has conveniently omitted to put in the women and children, which the world knows she did carry..." Both pieces very good.
