Description:

Rare Ames Model 1905/06 saber, blade length 31 1/2", 38 1/4" long overall. The unusual grip is covered in gray sharkskin and wrapped with brass wire which has come slightly undone at the pommel end and has been reattached. The grip itself shows minor wear. The basket-style hand guard is blued steel. The steel blade is marked "A.S. Co." For the Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, with a flaming shell mark and "1906", with the opposite side marked "U.S." The blade shows some dark oxidation overall with no accompanying pitting, with some sharpening and a single chip visible about 10" from the tip. The sword is housed in a steel scabbard with two suspension rings, wrapped with brown leather, marked "F" over "23" at the tip, and with the covering partially detached at the throat. The M1905/06 Experimental was intended as a one-fits-all sword for all branches, officers and enlisted. Only 1,315 with blade lengths of 34", 32", 30", and 27" were fielded for testing, 1,039 of which were produced under contract with Ames. The steel furniture was produced at the Springfield Armory and provided to Ames, and it appears that Ames imported the blades, based on that of the M1902, from Solingen.
