Description:

1903 WRIGHT FLYER BLUEPRINT
A great rarity, a section of an original blueprint of the 1903 Wright Flyer, 17 1/2" x 22", showing the aircraft's "Front Spar", a side view of the aircraft's engine showing the chain arrangement which connected the camshaft and crankshaft. Six mathematical calculations have been added in pencil top the drawing, either by the plan's original drafter Louis P. Christman or by Orville Wright, who reviewed these plans before final sets were prepared. Partially split at center fold, a few small edge tears, else very good. Ex: Cowan's Auctions. Orville and Wilbur Wright had never produced a complete set of drawings or blueprints for any of their flyers. In the early 1940s, Col. Edward Deeds commissioned Louis P. Christman (1893-1972) to complete a set of drawings of the 1903, 1904, and 1905 Flyers, and also the 1900, 1901, and 1902 Gliders. Christman worked closely with Orville Wright to produce an accurate set of drawings for the 1903 Flyer, travelling to the Smithsonian to take measurements and make drawings from the original 1903 Flyer displayed there and later the Franklin Institute to study and trace informal drawings the brothers had done. Back in Dayton, he then reviewed his plans and notes with Orville Wright. An important piece of aviation history.
