Description:

Rare and historical document, a bond certificate from the United States Loan Office, 1p. oblong 8vo., issued to Virginia resident John Overton in the amount of $13.06 at 6% interest rate per annum, starting October, 1795. This certificate, numbered ‘1320' at the top left, is an attractive piece displaying a ram's head vignette above the American seal and a decorative boxed ‘B' at the left, with a twisted border. The verso bears a handwritten note stating this bond was redeemed on Jan. 7, 1816. Heavy chipping at the right edge, some spotting, still very good. These bonds were authorized on August 4, 1790, to fund Alexander Hamilton's financial program, and were the very first securities traded when the New York Stock Exchange was founded in 1792. This enabled America to preempt diplomatic embarrassment and dependence on foreign powers during that period, assisting in the low-interest loans for the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
