Description:

Good content prison reform publication: 'On Prison Discipline and Penal Legislation', a reprinted sermon by physician and educator J. Berrien Lindsley, 64pp. 8vo., Nashville, ca. 1874, testifying against Tennessee's prison labor system, then-renowned for its frequent arrest of liberated slaves and its exploitation of their labor. In part: 'nine hundred and ten prisoners at present work out their terms in the penitentiary, more than half are at coal-mines, upon railroads, and hired to individuals...To Tennessee's eternal shame, our convicts are sold for a price...he hires him out, or resells him...the negros were not freed. Now, the proportion of blacks to whites...is five to one...many criminals are sent here for offenses ranging from eight cents, the value of a fence-rail, to sums not reaching five dollars...at an expense of over two hundred...' Much more content. Securely rebound in marbled blue boards, with a 'withdrawn' library sticker on the front pastedown. Very fine condition. Of course, arrests of black men and women skyrocketed throughout the South during the Reconstruction period, as former slave-holding states utilized the penal system to maintain African-Americans' inferior status in society and to exploit them for their labor.
