Description:

1862 CITY OF NEW ORLEANS $500 BOND
Rare $500 Mar. 20, 1862 Serial Number 1 Bond issued by the City of New Orleans on Mar. 20, 1862 and signed by the city comptroller, Treasurer and Mayor JOHN T. MONROE (1822-1871), later jailed by Butler for refusing to take the oath. This bond was issued roughly a month before Union naval forces under the command of Capt. David G. Farragut captured the city. The bond has retained its full complement of twelve coupons probably because the city government was superseded by the administration of Union Gen. Benjamin Butler. Very good.
