1861 SLAVE RECEIPT
A rare partly-printed slave receipt, 1p. oblong 8vo., Richmond, Feb. 21, 1861, in part: "Received of Jos[eph] Silver eleven hundred dollars, being in full for the purchase of one Negro Slave named Oscar the right and title of said slave I warrant and defend against the claims of all persons whatsoever…". Signed as a witness by William H. Lyons, Trustee of H. J. Corbell. Joseph Davis Silver (1818-1867) - plantation owner; signer of the Alabama Ordinance of Secession. From the 1860 Federal Slave Schedule, we find Joseph Silver lists 67 slaves.
