Description:

1860s LINCOLN/D.A.R. MOURNING FAN
A most exquisite relic of American history, a mourning fan belonging to a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The black fan is constructed of ostrich feathers and measures approx. 16.5 x 12 in. Presented within a white-painted shadow box with a filigree design border and bearing charming gilt accents. Per our consignor, family tradition holds that this fan was used by a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution while present at Abraham Lincoln's funeral. The national society also known as DAR is a lineage-based group open to all women who are directly descended from a person involved with the United States' struggle for independence. This charitable organization was founded in 1889 with a focus on history, education, and support of U.S. veterans. Notable members included: Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Rosalynn Carter, Caroline Harrison, Sarah Polk, Eleanor Roosevelt, Ginger Rogers, and many more. Though unexamined out of the frame, this fan has clearly been well-preserved and bears extensive historical ties. Accompanied by a will gifting this fan to our consignor, in which it states the fan belonged to a DAR member and was 'reportedly' used at Lincoln's funeral.
