Rare broadside, 1p., folio, Monterrey, June 25, 1836, in Spanish, with Gobierno Del Departamento de Nuevo Leon printed at top, a call by Nuevo Leon Governor Juan Nepomuceno de la Garza y Evia for citizens to come forth with donations in order to free Santa Anna from Anglo-Texan custody. In part: "... The national honor highly outraged by the perfidious colonists of Texas, with the uprising in that territory with the intention to secede from the Mexican republic, and over proud with the triumph attained the 21st of April last over the small force of the worthy Genl. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the occasion to avenge the outrages done to all the nation on the person of the illustrious prisoner has arrived...Liberate the illustrious president and remove him from the power of the rebel ingrates is a duty of all Mexicans for the coherence that this action has with the national decorum, and with the supreme government charged with keeping and defending the integrity of the territory...to sustain the rights of the Republic that audaciously these foreign adventurers have tried to usurp and oppressed as it is at the same time with the suffering of the treasury, has decided to excite the patriotism in you so that you do so also with respects to the inhabitants of that state, with the object that they contribute by way of voluntary donations...". After initial victories at the Alamo and Goliad, Santa Anna was finally defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836 and captured while hiding in a field disguised as a private. The Texans forced Santa Ana to sign the Treaty of Velasco, an official recognition by Mexico of the Republic of Texas' independence, but the Mexican government disowned Santa Anna and declared the treaty void.
