Description:

1814 PATTERN U.S. INFANTRY CAP PLATE, FROM SACKETS HARBOR
Very rare dug infantry cap plate, made ca. 1814 and recovered in Sackets Harbor, New York. Stamped tin alloy construction, 3.25 x 4.75 in., depicts a fierce eagle above crossed American flags on poles, draped across a drum with what appears to be a tripod in the background. 'U S INFAN' appears in bas relief at top, with 'REG' in the same style and font at bottom. Unfinished, with a hole and edge damage. The reverse of the piece is annotated: "SACKETS HARBOR N.Y. SEPT. 1962'. A very similar piece may be found online at https://www.gutenberg.org/files/38738/38738-h/38738-h.htm, Figure 9. This is likely the third pattern of the infantry cap plate prescribed in the 1812 regulations. Undoubtedly excavated on the site of Smith's Cantonment at Sackets Harbor, New York.
