Description:

1800 BRITISH SATIRICAL ETCHING
An excellent original British satirical etching by Charles Ansell (1747-1800), titled 'The Blenheim Drop, or Patent Pegs for Impertinent Puppies', published S. W. Tores, Piccaddilly, Jan. 27, 1800, 13 in. x 9 in., and hand-colored. This finely-penned satire shows a group of men and women in a pub, laughing at Lord Kirkudbright, who is hung from a peg on the wall of a pub. At top left is the tagline: 'as you're too small a breed d'ye see to bestow a thrashing, and breaking your bones will not be discarnable [sic], stand there my little Magpye til you can hold your impertinent tongue'. The wall upon which the Lord is hung also bears higher pegs for 'great puppies' and 'overgrown puppies'. Sholto Henry, Maclellan, 9th Lord Kirkudbright (1771-1827) was the butt of many satirical etchings of his time which poked fun at his hunchback and reputation for vanity and foppery. Very good condition. This famous etching appears in the British Museum.
