Description:

A fine original map by famous Dutch cartographer Henricus Hondius II (1597-1661) whose father and grandfather were also famous mapmakers, 23 x 19 in. (sight), France, 1631, titled in Latin 'Europe the most exact description,' a very accurate (for the era) map of Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, the British Isles, and Iceland. Cities and towns are labeled as well as major geographical features such as mountains, oceans, islands, and waterways. The map also has different illustrations throughout including ships in the bodies of water, animals in their native lands, and even trees in heavily forested areas. A caption in the top right reads, in part '[to] Louis XIII the most Christian King of France and Navarrae...by Henricus Hondius.' The verso features two pages from an unknown book titled 'Evrope' providing histories of different European peoples written in an older form of English. Very fine condition. This map interestingly features the mythical island of 'Frisland,' just off the coast of Iceland. Frisland appears on most maps of the Atlantic between the years 1560-1600 and is believed to have originated from explorers mistaking a southern part of Greenland for a separate island. The misconception gradually disappeared as more explorers sailed the Northern Atlantic.
