Description:

1783 LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER'S LETTER
Nice content lighthouse keeper's letter, an A.L.S. by one James Pearson, apparently engaged in refitting or constructing a lighthouse, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., likely Chesapeake Bay], Dec. 7, 1783, with integral address leaf addressed to merchant Francis Gurney in Philadelphia. In small part: '...[I received] the hundred dollars Cash...except 100 of the leads for the glass, of which there is that number deficient...some villains...broke into and robbed his Shallop (when she was drove on shore near the mouth of Lewes creek)...The keg of butter was also opened...high winds as blow here will breach them [the lighthouse glasses] immediately...' Much more discussion concerning construction needs, 'feather beds', oil for lighting, advances for workmen, etc. Wrinkled a bit with some damp stains and edge wear, overall still quite good. A bit of research would reveal the name of this structure.
