Description:

1777 IDENTIFIED 11TH VIRGINIA POWDER HORN
Powder horn attributed to Capt. Peter B. Bruin of Col. Daniel Morgan's Independent Rifle Company from Fauquier Co., part of the 11th Virginia Regiment which distinguished itself at the Battle of Monmouth. The 10 1/2" long undecorated powder horn has a 2 1/2" wood base carved: "[17]77 P B B 11 VA". Although the carving is not entirely distinct, it become very clear if misted with an innocuous solution. The horn has a carved spout and lacks a stopper. Accompanied by a letter of provenance issued by The Gallant Pelham Military Antiques which indicates that the horn came from the "James Anderson Collection of Virginia Artifacts". A letter from the owner of the collection, James Anderson, who has inherited the collection from his grandfather of the same name, also states that the horn belonged to Bruin and that it originated from his grandfather's collection. Letters and notes indicate that Bruin was wounded at Monmouth, then served on Morgan's staff until May 12, 1779 when he resigned due to complications from the wound.
