Description:

Very early manuscript document, 1p. oblong 12mo., "Cockshall", Dec. 31, 1687, a bill of sale for property near the village of Coxhall, modern-day Lyman, Maine. In part: "Know all men by these presents that I... Lackendon Simons hath bargained and sold three hundred acres of Land of upland and meadows being situated and lying at Cockshall not far from W[yeth?] I say I have sold three hundred acres unto John Burnum junior for and in due Consideration of ye Sum of fifteen pounds in marchantable pay. I... Simons do own that I have received four pounds and ten shillings as part of pay of ye fifteen pounds dated 31 December 1687..." Below, the same hand records the receipt of an additional payment of forty shillings. Shows folds with some splitting thereto, with some foxing and ragged edges, else very good. While European settlements in Maine had been established beginning at the outset of the seventeenth century, many of these collapsed and disappeared prior to the inclusion of modern Maine in the Masachusetts Bay Colony. The village of Coxhall would not be formally settled until 1767, nearly a century after the sale recorded here.
