Description:

165th PENNSYLVANIA (GETTYSBURG REGIMENT) SOLDIER WRITES OF LONGSTREET''S TIDEWATER CAMPAIGN
Good lot of six war-date letters written by Pvt. Samuel D. Reck of Co. F, 165th Pa. Infantry to his wife, 22pp. 8vo., describing his involvement fighting in opposition to Longstreet''s Tidewater Campaign of Spring, 1863. In small part: "[Newport News, Dec. 13, 1863]...we had the pleasure of holding a prayer meeting on the steam boat...before leaving Gettysburg...got my picture taken...we are now about seventy miles from Richmond, there are about 30,000 men encamped...[Battle of Deserted House, Jan.31, 1863]...we were marched out about seven or eight miles...our cavalry caught the rebel pickets and drove them in...captured some more of them...heard the elephant growl...for about two hours the balls and shells flew...pieces flew in every direction...after some heavy firing drove the rebels back...a few of Company A''s men are wounded...our men captured...40 or 50 of the rebels...a cannon ball fell about two feet from me...[Feb. 14]...they may come across Black Water again...they have got some pork laid up for the rebels...[he also describes how corn and pork was taken from a farmer who had stored it for Confederates and insulted Union troops]...["Camp Suffolk" Apr. 14, Siege of Suffolk]...very little firing among the pickets...[Apr. 17]...there was very heavy firing between our pickets and the rebels...one of the 112th Indiana killed...two of Colonel Spears cavalry 11th Pennsylvania killed...getting reinforcements daily...five thousand men...the rebels is going to make a dash on us...[May 2]...the rebels wanted to go through our fortifications along the river and our gunboat sailed up the river and throwed shell after shell///some regiments of ours went out to chase the sharp shooters...our forts opened on them mowing them down like grass...the rebels had to git, our fire was too hot for them...their loss...about 250...". Overall very good.
