Description:

10TH ARMORED DIV. RADIOMAN T/SGT. DUANE ELLWOOD RELICS, INSIGNIA, AND A TYPED SPEECH BY PATTON
Good grouping of medals, insignia, documents, etc. from 10th Armored Division radioman, Tech. 5th Grade Duane Ellwood. Included is: Ellwood''s citation and extract from his award of the Bronze Star, June 11, 1945, for services as a Radio Operator: "...During the period 19 Feb 45 to 30 April 45...under adverse conditions...as a Combat Command HQ''s radio operator...under intense artillery and rocket fire...[at] HEILBRON [sic] and CRAILSHEIM...as close to the enemy infantry as 100 yards...". Also present is Ellwood''s contemporary typed copy of an account of the June, 1944 speech given by Patton to members of the Third Army, well known by any Patton student. In part: "...Men, all this stuff you hear about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of bullshit...Every man is frightened at first in battle... If he says he isn''t, he''s a goddamn liar....I''m not supposed to be commanding this army. I''m not supposed to be in England...When you''re sitting around your fireside with your brat on your knee, and he asks you what you did in the great World War Two?'' You won''t have to say you shoveled shit in Louisiana!..." This is the first complete text of this speech we have seen, and it varies from every other account we''ve encountered. Finally , there is a captured Iron Cross, 2nd Class, a 1944 10th Armored Christmas card, a photo of HQ officers, and a number of pieces of insignia, including collar discs, shoulder patches (later issues), ribbons, souvenir pins, etc. Very good.
