Description:

Highly desirable U.S. paratrooper's "D-bale" M2 helmet, identifiable by its fixed semi-circular strap bales, fitted with a khaki webbing chin strap with an early "raised bar" brass buckle with snaps for securing a liner. It is cork-finished in olive green and heat-stamped "134A" inside the front rim. The seam of the rim is located at the front, and both sides of the helmet are painted with a white square topped with a small "tick" mark, indicating use by a member of the 101st Airborne Divisional HQ and Recon Platoon. The shell is fitted with a rare first pattern Hawley fiber liner with an olive-drab twill-like exterior, fitted with a suspension system of lightweight silver-grey rayon webbing, size-stamped "7 1/8" on the tan leather sweatband. The liner is further fitted with "A"-shaped khaki webbing chin straps, with a brown leather chin cup attached with black metal buckles. The name "Rick" is inscribed very faintly on both sides of the interior, and the exterior again bears the square divisional markings seen on the shell. The shell shows some wear to the rim, while the liner is missing its original thin brown leather chin strap, and shows some cracks to the front of the rim, separation between the sweat band and liner strap at two rivets, minor verdigris to the brass fittings and minor exterior wear overall, else very good. The initial purchase order for the Hawley liner was issued on July 9, 1941 and production ceased by mid-November, 1942. One of the rarest pieces of World War II headgear.
