Description:

Patriotic World War II poster, 16 x 22.5 in., by artist JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (1877-1960). Flagg created the iconic character ‘Uncle Sam' for his ‘I Want You' poster in 1917 for World War I. The poster offered here is an adaption of the image made by Flagg in 1917, showing ‘Uncle Sam' at the center beneath the title ‘You Can Lick Runaway Prices', in white lettering against a red banner. The bottom third holds another red banner, reading ‘You Hold The 7 Keys To Hold Down Prices'. Below this banner is a numbered list detailing how to keep prices down such as buying war bonds, paying taxes, reducing debt, following ration rules, the government's wage stabilization program, etc. Next to each line is a key bearing a red letter inside which spells out ‘VICTORY'. Flagg's name appears in red at the lower right of ‘Uncle Sam's' image. The printing line at the bottom right states this was ‘Distributed by O.W.I. for the Office of Economic Stabilization'. Very light chipping. A chip to the top red banner, likely from tape, and a minor stain at the top margin. Overall, very good.
