Description:

‘WARCHAU UNTER DEUTSCHER HERRSCHAFT'
Scarce book titled ‘Warsaw under German Rule' by Ludwig Fischer (Krakow: GmbH), 1942. 310pp. 8vo., discussing the improvements made to Warsaw following the German invasion in 1939, including content on the Warsaw Ghetto. The 1939 battle for the taking of the city is among the dozens of photo illustrations, as is the resulting damage, reconstruction, public works for restoration, Hans Frank (frontis photo), Nazi cultural events, etc. On the title page is an ownership signature with a bookplate on the front pastedown. LUDWIG FISCHER (1905–1947) was a Nazi Party lawyer and politician and Chief Administrator and Governor of the Warsaw District from October, 1939 until January, 1945. He oversaw the establishment of the Warsaw Ghetto and issued many anti-Semitic laws, as well as participating in the bloody destruction of the ghetto and deportation of its inhabitants. Fischer was also responsible for mass executions, slave-labor pogroms and the deportation of Poles and Polish Jews to the various German concentration camps. After the failure of the Warsaw Uprising, Fischer played an important role in Germany's planned destruction of Warsaw. He was later tried and hanged by the Poles. Cover edges and spine toned with folds and tears along the spine, 1943 ownership signature, otherwise very good.
