Description:

‘THE SEAMAN'S DAILY ASSISTANT'
A fascinating, original hardbound copy of the work ‘The Seaman's Daily Assistant, Being a Short, Easy & Plain Method of Keeping a Journal at Sea' by Thomas Haselden, who is described on the title of the present volume as ‘Late Teacher of Mathematics in the Royal Navy', 160pp. 8vo., (London: Mount and Davidson), 1790. The author, Thomas Haselden (d. 1740) was a mathematician and prolific author of navigation guides, best known for his work titled ‘The Description and Use of That Most Excellent Invention Commonly Call'd Mercator's Chart'. ‘The Seaman's Daily Assistant' was first published in London in 1757 after Haselden's death, with numerous subsequent reprints thereafter. This mariner's handbook features chapters on navigation and calculations, with numerous charts on times of day, amplitude, altitude, and so forth. Included is a chapter titled ‘A Journal from a Voyage from England towards Madeira', which shows examples of how to use the techniques of notation. The final two pages of the book bear holograph notations, one reading: ‘Gran McNutt [?] in Kingstown, Jamaica', while a second reads: ‘on my way from Jamaica to Shelborne [?] on the sloop Two Friends on the 20 April 1793 obs. In Latt 19-4 of the S.W. Grand Commans Bearing…'. Expected toning, light foxing throughout, a few pages detached and in generally weakened condition consistent with age, still overall good condition.
