‘THE EVENING STAR' REPORTS ON JAMES GARFIELD'S INAUGURATION
An account of inauguration day for JAMES A. GARFIELD, as reported by ‘The Evening Star', 6pp., Washington, March 4, 1881, the front page covering the crowds, decorations, ceremonies, inauguration ball, the grand procession, and the inaugural address. The paper reads in part: ‘...AT THE CAPITOL...The Diplomatic Corps, escorted by Sergeant-at-arms Bright...Secretary-of State...Mons Outrey...Minister of Mexico...Supreme Court Judges...Chief Justice Waite, entered...General Hancock and General Sheridan...round of applause...Vice President-Elect Arthur...said he would administer the rules impartially and fairly...the chaplain delivered a prayer asking the blessing of Heaven upon the incoming administration...the crowd in front of the stand was enormous, spreading out over acres...President Garfield arose and was greeted with tremendous shouts and prolonged cheers...'. The article then goes on to quote Garfield's inaugural address, in part: ‘...We cannot overestimate the fervent love of liberty, the intelligent courage, and the sum of common sense with which our fathers made the great experiment of self government...Under this constitution the boundaries of freedom have been enlarged...We ourselves are witnesses that the Union emerged from the blood and fire of that conflict purified and made stronger for all the beneficent purposes of good government...I shall greatly rely on the wisdom of Congress...I reverently invoke the support and blessings of Almighty God...'. This account continues to describe the ‘Grand Procession' and the military escort. The paper displays expected creasing and marginal tears. Overall, very good.
