Description:

‘NEW TRAVELS IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'
A fine copy of ‘New Travels in the United States of America' Vol. II by Jacques Pierre Brissot (London: J. S. Jordon), 1791. 483pp. 8vo., rebound in one-quarter leather with gilt titles and raised hubs on spine, marbled covers. Ownership signature at head of title page, the second volume of his work for the year 1788. The book is comprised of letters written by a fervent admirer of the American Revolution, the French political writer Jacques Pierre Brissot de Warville who fulfilled a dream by sailing to the United States in 1788. He spent several months traveling from Boston to Virginia, interviewing numerous Patriot leaders, evaluating the state of American slavery and abolitionist activity, and studying the Quaker lifestyle as a model for principled democracy. On his return to France he became enmeshed in the politics that led to the Revolution of 1789. Two years later he removed himself from the escalating turmoil to publish this work and present postwar America as a model for the French.
