Description:

‘LADY WASHINGTON'S RECEPTION' ENGRAVING
A large hand-colored engraving of ‘Lady Washington's Reception', 36 in. x 24 in., after the work by Daniel Huntington (1816-1906), with the original currently in the possession of the Brooklyn Museum. The print shows Martha Washington in Philadelphia along with 64 of the most powerful people in the United States at the time, including: ALEXANDER HAMILTON, JOHN DICKINSON, GILBERT STUART, WILHELM VON STEUBEN, JOHN JAY, JOHN ADAMS, GEORGE WASHINGTON, GOUVERNOR MORRIS, and ROBERT LIVINGSTON. Engraved by James Tyroler, who was active in the later part of the 19th century mostly focusing on natural landscapes. Fine condition, offered in an early gilt wood frame. The original painting was done by Huntington in 1861 during the Civil War. When the country was being torn apart by the Civil War, this image was meant to be a tool to unite the country and pay homage to the states' common origin. The romantic, idealized scene depicts an evening reception with dignitaries to honor Martha Washington, set in May of 1789 in Philadelphia, about a month after George Washington's Presidential inauguration. Sold with a farmed image guide naming each of the personalities present at the event.
