Though none of the Immortal Six Hundred were killed by the continuing Confederate artillery fire from Fort Sumter, 14 died of dysentery. Later represented Virginia in Congress. Very rare A.L.S. ‘A Fulkerson', 2pp. 4to., Virginia Military Institute, Jan. 16, 1856, to his sister Catherine, in part: ‘...I suppose you are anxious to hear the result of the examination. It commenced the 3d inst., & ended last Thursday, & as the saying is, I got through on every thing, as did John Tyler, my class were not examined on latin, in consequence of the death of Major Preston's wife, (who died during the examination) he being our Professor on latin, it was very agreeable to me not to be examined, being somewhat dificient on that part of my course… I am very glad to hear of the change in friend Billy's life, I hope the change will be for the better, at the same time I would rather have heard of his joining some other church, for I don't believe there is a true christian in the Baptist church for the reason, that the larger portion of them join whilst in an excited state, & even almost without spending a thought upon the manner in which they should serve the Lord, in other words they take improper steps to get religion, however I should not express my opinion so freely as there is a great many belonging to that church, whether religious or irreligious, are a great deal better than I myself am… [all sic]' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows folds overall, slightly ragged at the left edge and slightly toned at the edge, otherwise in very good condition overall.
