‘HINDENBURG EXPLODES' NEWSPAPER
Complete New York, May 7, 1937 edition of the Daily News, 86pp. 11.5 x 16.5 in., the headline reading: ‘Hindenburg Explodes' and captioned: '33 Die in Airship', with the rest of the cover bearing a photo of the burning airship. The article reads, in part: ‘...the greatest lighter-than-air craft in the world, was blown asunder and consumed by flames...33 of the 97 persons aboard were dead...those who perished died screaming in the wreckage or plummeted from the windows ...a terrific explosion ripped through the stern directly in front of the Nazi swastikas gleaming on the fish-like tail of the ship...Explosion after explosion boomed out as the fire spread...In a second the entire ship was aflame 300 feet above the sandy field...passengers and crew were cremated alive...At least 75 doctors and nurses...went to the field...contingent of 128 officers and men of the Coast Guard were sent from eighteen stations...' There is much more to this article including eye-witness accounts, survival stories, and ruminations on the cause of the disaster. Beginning on page 38 are five pages of a photo timeline of the tragic airship, depicting the Hindenburg during take-off, en route, and in flames. There are also a few photos of rescue parties and badly injured survivors. Although the Hindenburg was certainly not the first airship to crash, it was the first to be caught on film and resulted in the death of the airship era. Expected toning and chipping for its age. Overall, very good.
