‘HERKIMER REGIMENT' UNION SOLDIER'S LETTER
An A.L.S. of Henry M. Wood, Co. F, 152nd N.Y. Infty., 4pp. 8vo., Fort Steadman, VA, Nov. 28, 1864, to his cousin in Herkimer, NY. In part: ‘…We had a splendid Thanksgiving dinner…I saw Uncle Erastus Wood…He is in the 2nd New York Artillery…Tell…his sister not to get married until I get home…Erve Lame…he is what we call here dead beat, if a man is sick here as get to the rear they call him a dead beat and Erve dead beated it until he got out…Only ten months and a half then we will be free again. I for one will enlist if my country needs it. But I think this winter will finish the whole thing. At least most soldiers think so…I want it to be settled. Our Corps Commander left yesterday. He was gone to Washington. His name is [Winfield Scott] Hancock. He is a brave and noble officer. General Humphreys has took command of our Corps now. He was chief of Hancock's staff…'.
