‘HERKIMER REGIMENT' SOLDIER'S LETTER
An A.L.S. of Philip Crewell, a private in Co. F, 35th N.Y. Infantry (‘Herkimer Regiment'), 2pp. 4to., Washington, Mar. 29, 1862, to his brother in Herkimer, NY. In part: ‘…We are going to stay here until we get paid off…About the last marching. We…got here a Saturday morning…with the loss of one man and he got off the cars and went on ahead and having plenty of liquor didn't look a where he was going and run off a bridge…They think we will go from here. Sgt. Laflen says we will sail up the York River which lays toward Richmond. There was a fleet went out a Thursday but where it was bound I can't tell…General Burness Dennison arrived here last night. There is to be a move made but where it ain't for us to know…There has been a battle at Winchester since we left. The fight commenced last Friday and it is supposed to continue yet. There was 108 men killed on our side, the loss of rebels is not known. There was fifteen thousand of them against eight thousand of ours…I wishes we could have been there…'. Very good, with the original postal cover, stamp removed.
