Description:

‘BLACK DEVILS' SERGEANT'S DISCHARGE
A rare discharge of Marimon Hansbery (d. 1986), Black Battalion Sergeant Major of the 3rd Battalion of the 370th Infantry, the only World War I U.S. Army combat unit commanded by African-American officers and nicknamed by the Germans ‘The Black Devils' for their ferocity in combat. The document, 1p. 4to., Camp Grant, IL, April 7, 1919, contains Hansbery's personal data, and is signed by THOMAS A. ROBERTS, cavalry colonel of the 370th. On June 11, 1918, Hansbery and the 3rd Battalion of the 370th – commanded by Otis B. Duncan - marched to Velaines in the Meuse region of France. In September 1918, it took took over a full regimental sector, with the 3rd Battalion going into reserve at Tincelle Farm. The respite was short-lived: on September 30, the 3rd attacked the fortified German positions near Ferme de la Riviere and Bois de Mortier, with fighting ongoing until October 4. On October 12, the unit was sent to Manneux Farm for recuperation, then sent out to Regniowez in the Ardennes. This initial objective was changed, however, to march to Le Gue d'Hossus in Belgium, and the 3rd arrived there just moments before the signing of the Armistice. Exhibits toning and staining, as well as folds and marginal wear. Still good.
