Description:

ZACHARY TAYLOR
(1784-1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. Fine content L.S. "Z. Taylor" as President-elect, 2pp. 4to., Baton Rouge, Dec. 9, 1848 to inventor William Wheeler Hubbell in Philadelphia. In part: "...Your communication in relation to a gun and shell of your invention, and accompanying pamphlet...I shall, of course, be happy to see you after my installation in office at Washington and to hear whatever you may have to say in relation to your fire-arms and shell. But if it be your object to procure their introduction into the service, I...suggest you lay your plans and application...before the Chief of the Ordnance Department...Should he see fit, after having the efficiency of your invention tested...any propositions which you may have to offer with that view, will be duly entertained...". Very good. Hubbell would be issued at least three patents for improvement in shells, the first eight years later for a specially-weighted fused cannonball intended to fly truer than existing ordnance. Hubbell was issued at least three patents for improvement in shells, one on Jan. 7, 1862 for "improvement in explosive shells for ordnance".
