Description:

YANKEE PONDERS BURNING BALTIMORE
War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Sep. 18, 1862. Sgt. Arthur L. Chase (1843-1864) of the 129th New York Vols. writes his brother George, in part: ‘…The Fort is situated on a hill commanding Chesapeake Bay Harbor and the whole city of Baltimore which we could lay in ashes in less than twenty-four [hours] if we should wish so to do. Last week we expected that we should have the pleasure of exchanging a few shots with Stonewall Jackson but Gen. McClellan has hacked him for the present. Wheeler has got out of it very well but I should think with not much credit to himself. The 126th were all taken prisoners at Maryland Heights. Two companies of our Regt. have gone to Philadelphia with prisoners taken at Harpers Ferry. One company is the color company and my position in line of Battle places me two paces to the rear of the colors…' This letter was written one day after Antietam, which was the bloodiest single-day battle in the war.
