Description:

WINSTON S. CHURCHILL
(1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister who led England through the Blitz and orchestrated the British liberation of occupied Europe and Germany. Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. War-date S.P., 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" mounted to 7" x 10" , a typical "bulldog" pose of England's greatest Prime Minister, signed on the mount: "Winston S. Churchill Christmas 1942". Ink slightly faded, with photo bearing a bit of silvering at margins (not apparent when viewed from the front), else very good. By Christmas, 1942 the tide of the war had just begun to turn, as the German thrust into Russia ground to a halt at Stalingrad and Americans began to take ground in North Africa. From the estate of the recipient, Col. Ernest "Tex" Lee, who served throughout the war as Eisenhower's Executive Officer and Aide de Camp. Lee joined Ike in June, 1941 and assisted in the planning of the invasion at Normandy and the ultimate defeat of Germany.
