(1732 - 1792) Continental brigadier general who fought at Long Island and was wounded at White Plains. Manuscript L.S. "W Smallwood" as Governor of Maryland, 1p. 4go., "In Council", Aug. 18, 1786 to U.S. Constitution signer DANIEL OF ST. THOMAS JENIFER (1723 - 1790): "...Respecting the property sold to Doctr. John Shuttleworth, we think it most advisable to vacate the Sale and resell the said Property, as he has declined to comply with the Terms of the Sale by giving Bond with Security and is unable to pay for the same if a suit should be instituted against him to compel a payment ..." Jenifer adds an endorsement on verso: "August 1786 From the Govern[o]r & Council ab. reselling the property Dr. Shuttleworth purchased." Usual folds, else fine. Matted and framed to reveal both sides together with a portrait of Smallwood.
