WILLIAM PENGELLY
(1812-1894) English geologist known for his important discoveries in the study of Paleolithic man. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vi., Devon, Aug. 14, 1869 to his friend Frederick Howlett, Jr., an astronomer and friend of Darwin. In part: "…There is to be an excursion to Torquay…The town has decided to invite…200 of the party to dinner…Mr. Vivian my colleague, will take one fragment to Kent's Cavern; I shall have the pleasure of taking another to points of geological l interest along the west…Each fragment, if so disposed, will visit the Cavern during the day…". Kent's Cavern is recognized as the most important Paleolithic cave system in Britain. Three slight mounting traces to verso, otherwise very good condition.
