Description:

WILLIAM P. CARLIN
(1829-1903) Indian Fighter and Union brigadier general who defeated Jeff Thompson at Fredericktown and led a corps at Chickamauga and Atlanta. Superb content A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Carrollton, IL, Oct. 30, 1895 to a young man, extremely critical of Great Britain, written to a potential fighter in World War I. In part: '...Your letter...shows a praise-worthy and intelligent interest in the battlefield of Stones River and of the great Civil War. I suppose you are a young man and a patriotic American...you will probably live to see a great foreign war which will rage in the vicinity of your own home [Great Britain]. The British Government sees that this is the time to seize everything on the face of the Earth that is worth having...She tricks with contempt the deceived sentiment of the American people misnamed the Monroe Doctrine. She bullies and brutally insults every weak state. She has connived at the destruction of the seal fisheries of Alaska...and has practically her paws on a large part of Venezuela...[and] Australia and New Zealand...War is a great calamity, but the course of Great Britain is hastening its advent...' Fine condition.
