WILLIAM M. EVARTS
(1818-1901), American politician and statesman from New York; Attorney General of the U.S. (1868-69); U.S. Secretary of State (1877-81); U.S. Senator (1885-91). He was chief counsel for President Andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial. Partly printed D.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. folio, June 8, 1880, a "Special Passport" issued to "His Honor William H. Hunt, Judge of the Court of Claims of the United States...about proceeding abroad, accompanied by his wife...". William H. Hunt (1823-84) was an American lawyer and statesman; Judge of U.S. Court of Claims (1878-81); U.S. Secretary of the Navy (1881-82); U.S. Minister to Russia (1882-84). Couple of holes, mostly at folds. WITH an L.S. as Secretary of State, pp. 4to., Mar. 16, 1878, to Ellwood Evans, in Olympia, Washington Territory. Reads in part: "…The President having appointed you to be an honorary Commissioner…at the International Industrial Exposition to be held in Paris in 1878, I hereby enclose your Commission…I also enclose a blank form of the oath of allegiance…" Signed on verso. Horizontal fold repair on verso, not affecting text or signature. WITH, another passport, 1880, with a stamped signature of Evarts. Three pcs.
