Description:

(1869 – 1940) U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1933 to 1937. Instructed by Roosevelt to do what he could to protest Nazi treatment of Jews 'unofficially,' while also attempting to maintain cordial diplomatic relations. Convinced from first hand observation that the Nazis were an increasing threat, he resigned over his inability to mobilize the Roosevelt administration, particularly the State Department, to counter the Nazis prior to the start of World War II. Rare T.L.S. as American Ambassador to Germany on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Sep. 25, 1936, to the American Consul in Hamburg, John G. Erhardt. In part: '...let me thank you for...the article on Washington. It is quite a good German account...Of course there were several curious accidents which gave our first president his chance to lead the thirteen colonies, but these are not so generally known...' A few chips at left margin, else very good. WITH: a ca. 1936 Christmas card showing the American Embassy in Berlin, sent by Dodd to Erhardt. Slight interior tear. Dodd and his family were featured in Erik Larson's book 'In the Garden of Beasts'.
