WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE
(1744 - 1833) American naval officer captured at Tripoli, and later commanded the Constitution in her victory over the Java. Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Apr. 30, 1832, to The Honorable Henry A. S. Dearborn, U.S. Senator, Washington City, describing the medical treatment of his daughter and other matters. In part: '...How have you been my dear General since I parted with you at Washington? Myself and daughter had a most delightful visit to my highly valued friend Col. Contee of...Maryland...a princely fellow. The forest lands of Prince Georges [Maryland] are amongst the very best..From his house we could see Annapolis...It was fortunate we returned as early as we did, for my dear Daughter Mary on her arrival immediately took to her bed on which she remained for upwards of two weeks seriously and even dangerously ill. She was Bled, cuped [sic, cupped] and blistered all within 10 hour. She had a raging fever tending to the Brains, this will give you a small idea, how mildly our Phila Physicians treat their Patients....Within ten days past I have been extremely ill and I presume my Phisician Doct. Harris is thought me dangerously as he [illeg.] me five times a day. Thank God! I am now quite convalescent...The Secretary of the Navy [Levi Woodbury]...requests me to hold myself in readiness to take the command of the Boston yard about the last of May...Commdr Morris goes to the Board...I shall not remove my family upon going to take the command...entre nous, my wife is much averted to it, not liking the climate herself and fearful it will not agree with me which may be the case, but as our friend General Miller said we will try...When do you think Congress will adjourn?....".
