WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE
(1744 - 1833) American naval officer captured at Tripoli, and later commanded the Constitution in her victory over the Java. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, [n.d. but 1823?], responding to and writing on the same sheet as a letter written by D.A. Davis "...on the subject of the vessel to Columbia River...", in part: "...It is yet uncertain whether a Vessel will be sent to Columbia River. Should one be put in Commission for that service will ask the Secretary of the Navy to do me the favor to...your nephew taken. You must bear in mind that the appointments of officers...rest solely with the Secretary, with which the Board has nothing to do...", with social content thereafter. Boldly penned and very good.
