Description: WILLIAM B. ASTOR
(1792 - 1869) Second son of John Jacob Astor, who became a partner in the firm Jacob Astor & Son.. Upon his father's death, Astor became the richest man in the United States, inheriting roughly $18 million in 1848. Like his father, Astor invested in New York City real estate. Because of his vast holdings, he earned him the nickname the "Landlord of New York." L.S. "Wm B. Astor" 1p. 8vo., New York, Dec. 24, 1869, to "W.S. Chainley Esqr. / Chairman Sinking Fund / New Haven, Conn." aggressively writing: "Dear Sir, Yours of the 23d Inst. is received. I will give 92 for the $35000, of New Haven City 6% Bonds you offer, that being the rate at which similar securities are selling here. I am Sir Very Respectfully yrs…" Light toning at bottom margin, light folds, else very good condition.
