WILLIAM A. QUARLES
(1825-1893) Confederate brigadier general who led a brigade through the Atlanta Campaign. Captured at Franklin and at Ft. Donelson while a colonel. Scarce war-date A.D.S. as Post Commander of Camp Cheatham, [n.d., ca. Nov. - Dec., 1861], Clarksville, Tn., Quarles' copy of a telegram sent to him by Gen. William J. Hardee, likely also sent to Gen. Clark. In part: "...Allow Dr. Lyle to have no charge of the Hospital. I have instructed Gen. Clark on that subject. Dr. Laurence will be down in the morning. Order Dr. Lyle...to return to Hopkinsville...". Dr. William D. Lyle, often called Big Medicine", served until late 1863, including during the carnage at Shiloh and as Johnston's Inspector of Hospitals. Tiny marginal chip, else fine.
