Description:

WESTERBORK JEWISH TRANSIT CAMP CURRENCY (3)
Lot of three pieces of scrip from the Nazi transit camp in occupied Holland, used by the Germans as a gathering point for Jews destined for concentration camps and death camps deeper within the German Reich. The notes, all circulated, are in denominations of 10, 25, and 100 'cent', and like most such scrip, were worthless. Jews would surrender hard currency for these notes which could be used in the camp to purchase various necessities. Rare. Notable prisoners in Westerbork included Anne Frank, who was transported to Camp Westerbork on 8 August 1944. The camp was not unlike Theresienstadt in that, on the surface, it appeared that Jews would be well cared-for at the facility. In reality, Gestapo officer Albert Konrad Gemmeker had overall command of the camp and was responsible for sending up to 100,000 Jews to the death camps. After the war, Gemmeker was sentenced to just ten years in prison. His light sentence was apparently due to his claim that he had no idea what would happen to the Jews after they were transported out of Westerbork.
