WEST VIRIGNIA CIVIL WAR CORRESPONDENCE
A war date correspondence of ten letters written by members of the Barnes family of West Virginia, 21pp. dating between, Oct. 28, 1861 to June 1, 1864 together with six original transmittal envelope (mostly patriotic). Includes an A.L.S. of B. R. Barnes, 3pp. 8vol, Harrisville, Virginia, Nov. 9, 1862, who writes, in part: "...Mr. Pierpoints got a letter from Mager Pierpont last nite [sic] he said that they had orders to march & he did not know where... I was at Fairmont last week the people are all well.. The rebels set A. H. Ritchies house on fire a week or two ago and got the bridal on his best horse but watch dog frightened the rebels [sic] thieves away... Mother says you must not join the standing army..." Barnes again writes from Beverly, West Virginia on July 12, 1863 in a 3pp, A.L.S. writing to his mother, "...I shall not say how Father is getting along as he is going to [illeg.] for himself. the rest of the wounded are doing fine... Confirmation of the surrender of Vicksburg on the 4th has reached here, it is the best news of the war, also of the defeat of Lee in Pa. and the dispersment [sic] of his army. Wm. L. Jacksons threatens us again, he says he lost too many man by one Regiment to give up as he did, they had three wagons loaded with wounded taking back with; instead of taking good in that that he expected to steal from the citizens could he have passed the Yankee lines. I care not how soon they come as I should like to see them one come we can whip all such land pirates they can bring against us..." One J. K. Barnes of the "1st. Sept. Brig." complains in an A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., "Near Beverly. W. Va." Oct. 12, 1863 that "...This.. .has always been one of the dullest places I have ever been in, and seems to be getting worse every day..." Meanwhile Pvt. Uz Barnes of the 10th West Virginia writes in an A.L.S. 2pp. 8vol, Harrisville, Dec. 1, 1863, writes that he had "...ben Just at Blackburns and he says that he is ordered for all the cripples to report at some sergent [sic] of the post in fifteen days from this time now I am not able to stand on picket be cos [sic] my foot suffers with the cold..." Another member of the Barnes clan writes from Harrisville on May 29, 1864 (A.L.S. 2pp. 4to) that "...Friday was Regamentle [sic] muster Core [sic] & Staff..." More good content. Usual folds, moderate toning and wear, overall very good condition.
