WEST POINT AFTER ARNOLD'S TREASON A good pair of manuscript documents concerning the transfer of the 1st New York Regiment to West Point, only weeks after the discovery of Benedict Arnold's attempt to hand the key fortress to the British. The first piece, a manuscript D.S. "Henry Van Woert", 1p. oblong 8vo, West Point, Oct. 18, 1780 certifies that "...Capt William Crannel has brought in his Sloops Seventy persons Consisting of Officers, Non Commissioned Officers, Privates, Women & Children belonging to the 1st New York Regiment, also seven Men Prisoners of War, from Albany to this place, the Men were detained a board said Sloop four days... ", The second piece, a manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Albany, Oct. 28, 1780 (and other dates) concerns the transfer of the 4th New York from Albany to West Point, together with the transfer of two companies a week earlier on the 17th. The document also concerns other troop transfers to West Point earlier in the year. The movements were part of a reinforcement of West Pont following the discovery of Arnold's betrayal. On September 27, 1780 Washington ordered the acting commander of the fort to "...immediately make a distribution of the troops under your command to the several posts that the whole may be in a state of defence [sic] at the shortest notice. You will also have each work supplied with ten days provision wood water and stores and keep up constantly that supply; and you will take every other precaution for the security of the post. The Enemy will have acquired from General Arnold a perfect knowledge of the defenses, and will be able to take their measures with the utmost precision... ". Both documents bear some minor marginal faults light toning from tape repairs, light folds, otherwise very good condition. $700-900
