Description:

WENTWORTH CHESWELL
(1746-1817) New Hampshire African-American freeman, who fought in the Revolutionary War and held many positions of political authority, including schoolmaster, selectman, and Justice of the Peace. Famed for making a ride similar to Paul Revere's, in Exeter, NH. Excessively rare A.D.S., with variant signature, "Wentworth Cheswill" as Justice of the Peace, 1p., folio, Newmarket, Aug. 24, 1815. The highly-educated Cheswell filled out the document, an appeal by local residents to the Sheriff of Rockingham County, to assess another local man charges for a lawsuit. The document, printed by C. Norris & Company, is remarkably well preserved, with light toning and several spots of light soiling.
