WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON SEAMAN'S ACT, SIGNED BY A SHIP'S CREW
An unusual D.S. 2pp. folio, Boston, July-Aug. 1808, an agreement "between the Master, Seaman, or Mariners of the Ship Eliza Elijah T. Homes, Master, now bound from the Port of Boston to Martinique &** back to her port of Discharge in the United States of America" Signed or marked by seventeen crew members including the ship's master, cooper, mate, steward, cook, carpenter and seamen. The imprint was produced in response to an act of Congress of July 20, 1790, entitled "An Act, for the Government and Regulation of Seamen, in the Merchants' Service" the text of which has been printed on the reverse. An unusual imprint, cataloged twice in Evans as 22959 (New York, 1790) and 23849 (Boston printing, c. 1793-99), this version has no printer's credit. Toned at folds, minor marginal chips, else very good.
